About the author

Helen Friel, Ian Friel

Helen Friel is a paper engineer, illustrator, and author known for her innovative and immersive book designs for both children and adults, including the remarkable achievement of creating the first pop-up book sent into space. In 2020, Helen joined Falmouth University as a tutor for the MA Illustration (Online) program and has since become a qualified higher education teacher. Her course, "Pop-up Book Fundamentals," is also available on Domestika. As a co-founder of the London chapter of Ladies, Wine & Design with Emilie Chen, Helen supports an initiative by Jessica Walsh aimed at empowering women in the creative industries and bridging the gap between education and industry leadership.

Ian Friel became a freelance writer and historian in 2007 after a long career in museums. Hoakes Island is his first children's book, written with his daughter, Helen Friel.
